They’re affordable, lightweight, but also versatile: you can use them either as surfaces or backgrounds. Also, making these requires only a few components, yet you can be as creative as you like with colors and textures. I described these backgrounds as “2-in-1” because you can use a single board and paint it on both sides....

“Please could you tell me how to make money from photography?” This is a question I get asked quite often by email, a majority are students entering their adult working life and trying to figure it all out. And yet I don’t think it’s the right approach when pursuing any passion to obsess about making money. Get a full-time job first to pay the bills, that’s my main advice. but don’t do it so long that it poisons your creativity, individuality and drive as there’s a very real risk of that happening....

While teaching a recent workshop I joked that street photography was the only genre where people would buy £3k worth of cameras and lenses and then deliberately use them to make out of focus, grainy, imperfect images. This led to a pretty interesting discussion about the merits to imperfection, and I think some of those points are worth sharing here, as it really helped contextualise some of the students ideas about their work, and allowed them to shoot a little more freely, chasing down perfection in moments rather than technicalities....
