I see so much photography on a daily basis that a lot of it all kind of starts to look the same after a while. But occasionally I am surprised and caught off guard. When the work of Sweden-based Gabriel Isak came onto my screen, I was immediately fascinated. It has a surreal beauty to it with a level of perfection that almost makes his photographs look like illustrations. DIYP got in touch with Gabriel to find out more....

In 2014 movie Interstellar, Christopher Nolan managed to create the first scientifically accurate black hole. Some sources claim it’s not the case, but nevertheless – I think the movie and the special effects are fantastic. This movie has inspired filmmaker Thomas Vanz to create a short film named INTRA, which takes you on a journey from a black hole to the Big Bang in only four minutes. Inspired by the “White Hole Theory” and Interstellar, Thomas created this abstract, immersive video using mainly practical effects and chemical reactions....

This is one of the weirdest, but at the same time coolest, lens filters I’ve ever seen. There have been a lot of filters purely for one-off effects over the years, and some of them are still commonly available today. Most of them are kind of gimmicky and, well, this one is, too, really. It’s the Soratama from Zenjix, a 72mm filter that actually has a glass sphere right in the centre of it....

If you’ve ever tried to photograph a person underwater, you know how important crystal clear water is to producing usable images. I do most of my underwater photography in Georgian Bay which is exceptionally clean and clear. It’s also freezing cold, and far away from urban areas – which complicates the logistics required to produce a commercial photography session (it’s a 3 or 4 hour drive for me and most models, stylists, make up artists etc....
