The phone camera has become a ubiquitous part of daily life. There’s no getting away from them anymore, even if we wanted to. Wherever we go or whatever we do, we always have them with us, and we often get the urge to grab a quick photo with them, even if we own bigger and more advanced cameras. And so you want to get the most out of your phone when you have to use it....

At the beginning of the 20th century, the U.S. had a major child labor problem. The children were working in mills, fields, mines and factories, and the statistic says that one in five children under 16 were working at this time. But one photographer’s work helped to put this to an end. In this video from Vox, you’ll hear the story of Lewis Wickes Hine. His powerful images of child workers from the early 20th century contributed to the end of child labor in the United States....

We’ve already seen some AI software that can upsample low-res images. You know, CSI-style. Face Depixelizer is another AI-powered software, particularly focused on faces. It can take a pixelated, low-res photo and turn it into a realistic portrait. While the results are pretty impressive – the app doesn’t come without its quirks. Face Depixelizer relies on StyleGAN, the same technology that creates faces of people that don’t exist. It was made by Russian coder Denis Malimonov, who shared it on GitHub and Colab....

Well, if this isn’t one of the weirdest but coolest camera modifications I’ve seen, I’m not sure what is. Canadian company, Back-Bone Gear has been performing camera modifications to GoPros and Sony RX0 cameras for a while now. They offer a range of modifications as well as kits you can implement yourself. Their latest release is the elegant monster you see above, the Ribcage RXo II. It’s essentially a Sony RX0 II converted to accept Micro Four Thirds or C-Mount lenses, and boy does it look like it’d be fun to play with....

Although there are still a few exceptions and holdouts, the vast majority of movies, cartoons and other cinema and broadcast content today is shot digitally. In the 20th century, though, digital wasn’t really much of a thing. At least, not until we got right to the very end of the century.
