NASA’s Curiosity rover has shared all kinds of photos with us, from remarkable discoveries to “tourist selfies.” But a recent photo it captured has made people’s imagination run wild. On 7 May, Curiosity took a photo of what appears to be a “doorway” carved into a Martian rock. It’s perfectly flat and rectangle-shaped, so it has sparked all sorts of conspiracy theories from the moment it was released. Curiosity rover snapped the photo with its Mastcam while it ascended Mount Sharp on sol 3466....

DJI’s Osmo Mobile gimbal has been hugely popular since it was first released. But, one thing that gave the competition so much advantage was its cost. Being released at $299, the $150 or less alternatives were much easier for customers to swallow. DJI’s first answer was to drop the price to $199. But now they’ve have answered that price difference again with the new Osmo Mobile 2, at a mere $129....

DJI is developing technology to allow anybody with a WiFi-enabled smartphone to access information on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying in your vicinity. The reasons why this is a good idea are quite obvious. To increase safety and security. But there are definitely going to be some privacy hurdles to overcome. The system seems like an extension of their AeroScope system, although without being quite as powerful. AeroScope was designed for officials at airports, military installations and other restricted areas to spot unauthorised drone use....

I have to admit, I’m not really a cat person. I prefer a different kind of four-legged animal. Cats and I just don’t get along. But visually, there is something intrinsically fascinating and beautiful about them. Especially, as photographer Andrius Burba discovered, when photographing them from underneath. The Underlook project started several years ago when Andrius saw “a ridiculous looking picture on the Internet”. The photo was a cat sitting on a glass table, photographed from underneath....
