Pentax just announced the HD PENTAX-D FA 70–210mm F4 ED SDM WR Pentax K-mount lens. For Pentax APS-C cameras that is equivalent to 107–322mm. The lens will start shipping mid-March with a price tag of $1100. Pentax informs us that this is a compact, lightweight and weather-resistant telephoto zoom lens for use with 35mm-format full-frame digital SLR providing great portability. The 70–210mm f/4 will be smaller, more affordable and about half the weight compared to the Pentax 70–200mm f/2....

I shoot the vast majority of my images on a tripod. I am fully aware that I sacrifice some flexibility in the field. However, such an approach gives me sharp images with a horizon in level. I predominantly shoot during the golden hour. This entails that I often shoot exposures where the shutter is open way longer than if I was shooting in bright daylight. If possible, I also almost exclusively shoot at base ISO....

Sigma Global has announced an “Online New Product Presentation” set for April 27th. Given some recent Tweets from Nokishita, it looks like it’s going to be the official announcement for the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art series lens for Panasonic and Sony mirrorless systems. They’ve leaked some of the specs for the new lens, along with a price, stating that it’s been added to some overseas retailers already. Surprisingly, there don’t appear to be any product photos of the actual lens yet, which is designed for Leica L mount and Sony E mount systems and expected to cost $899, but no doubt they’ll start to pop up in the next few days....

Well, this is a bit of a surprise statement from Terushi Shimizu, President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions during a recent briefing. According to an article on Nikkei Japan, he made the statement that smartphone image quality will exceed that of DSLRs “within the next few years”, although an image accompanying the presentation suggested a more specific timeframe with a 2024 date. If anybody would know about the image quality of sensors inside DSLRs and smartphones, it’s Sony....
