The “free” image website Unsplash – a site that remains as controversial as it is popular – has released what it describes as “the most complete high-quality open image dataset ever”. The “dataset” in this instance is essentially the keywords and search metadata of a whole bunch of images that can be downloaded in one big lump. There are two datasets available. The “Full” version contains information for over 2 million images from more than 200,000 photographers around the world and is available for non-commercial use only....

VSCO (Visual Supply Co) opened an office in New York in December 2015, along with the free studio. Only one year after opening, they decided to shut it down. They say the reason is an attempt to centralize the staff at the company’s office in Oakland, where they have the main headquarters. This decision didn’t go without consequences, at least for the employees – VSCO laid off the complete staff from the New York office....

Recently, it’s commonly used (especially by Marvel) to tease a potential sequel or follow up movie. But to be able to watch them without waiting for them to appear on YouTube, you have to sit through all the credits. These credits list hundreds of names, but what do they all do? And what does “Best Boy” actually mean?...

Advertisements Skin Skin I want to be able to see it. Often, make up artists I work with don’t even use foundation for beauty. They might colour correct under the eyes and spot fix a few imperfections, but in general, they let the skin shine. When I’m retouching an image with heavy foundation, it’s very difficult – if not impossible – to maintain a natural skin texture. Skin has minuscule colour variations and foundation unifies it and fills in pores – this is great for a wedding or graduation but, in my opinion, doesn’t usually work for the style of photography I do....

I always thought being the stills shooter on a movie set would be such great fun. It probably is, too. But when one hears stories and sees footage of them in action one quickly realises how stressful it is. Under constant pressure to get the shot, it must be perfect every time. Your images are going to sell the entire movie to the general public. You need to not only get the technical side perfect, you need to capture the mood and spirit of the characters, too....
