New Patent Shows Canon Still Working On Quad Pixel Autofocus

Since the announcement of Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus system, introduced with the Canon EOS 70D, we kind of knew that Quad Pixel Autofocus would be inevitable eventually. Several new patents have been released over the last few years, including this one from 2020 suggesting that it might come with the EOS R1. Now a new patent from Canon about Quad Pixel AF adds more fuel to that EOS R1 fire. Dual Pixel AF is pretty awesome, as evidenced by the significant lack of auto-backfocus jokes we used to regularly hear about Canon DSLRs....

Photographing The Milky Way With A Smartphone And The Future Of Photography

Some believe that smartphones will never replace “real cameras” like DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. This article is about providing evidence to the contrary and about making some amazing images with limited equipment. Here’s my account on shooting some of my first images of the Milky Way with nothing but a smartphone and a tripod. Introduction Introduction The above photo was made with a smartphone. Smartphone sensor technology has actually been quite good for a couple years but it’s only just now that we’re seeing the right combination of sensors, lenses and software to make photographs that were once only possible on enthusiast-oriented, large sensor cameras....
