Leica has released a smartphone. Well, technically, Japanese multinational conglomerate, SoftBank Group has released a “new” smartphone with Leica branding. But for all intents and purposes, it will obviously become known as “the Leica smartphone”. If the name sounds familiar, SoftBank is the company with which Leica invested $121 million in Light in 2018. While Leica has lent its name to camera modules in various devices from Huawei and others, this is the first time that Leica’s name along with the famous red dot will be front and centre on the device as a whole....

Last week, the World Press Photo shared with us its stunning Global Contest winners. And now, the overall winner has been announced. The World Press Photo of the Year for 2022 was taken by Amber Bracken, showing red dresses hung on crosses along a roadside to commemorate children who died at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. Other than the heartbreaking winning photo and the story behind it, the World Press Photo Contest has announced category winners in Stories, Long-Term Projects, and Open Format categories....

It started with a phone call from the picture editor of one of country’s best selling newspapers asking me to catch a flight that evening to Amsterdam to accompany a journalist for a story first thing the next morning. I was warned to be very discrete as the story could be very sensitive to some people. It involved a Dutch trawler that was registered in the UK under a flag of convenience that enabled it to use up 25% of the UK fishing quota by just one “industrialized” super trawler....

Adding to the standard look and the six existing “premium” colours, Nikon has added an all-black camera to the Nikon Z fc lineup that’s giving me serious Nikkormat FT3 vibes! Specs-wise, it’s no different to the regular Nikon Z fc, which means it still doesn’t have a port for a remote trigger, but the new all-black look does look very cool and is perhaps even more accurate to the “retro” feel of old Nikons....

Panasonic’s announcement from CES today talks about the upcoming Lumix S1 and S1R cameras announced at Photokina. On initial announcement, not a lot of information was released. We know that the S1 will house a 24-megapixel full frame sensor, and the S1R will be 47-megapixels. We also know that they would both utilise Leica’s L mount. But beyond that, there’s still not a lot out there. But now Panasonic has released information two of the features that will be coming to the Lumix S series cameras....
