Good news for all adventurers comes from Fujifilm. They have announced new FinePix XP120, a rugged compact camera for all sorts of outdoor adventures. It has a 16.4MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and 28-140mm Fujinon lens. After showing us a few teaser images, and ahead of tomorrow’s announcement of what is expected to be a new medium format mirrorless camera from Hasselblad, images and info have been leaked. It seems every time a new camera is about to be released, somebody somewhere always slips up and lets content out online before they’re supposed to, although it’s rarely the manufacturer themselves. Photography reatiler K&M Camera in New York let this one slip through, which would confirm that it is indeed the world’s first mirrorless medium format camera, with a price tag of $8995....

The task was clear – an original portrait of a Medieval Knight Sword Fighter (national champion). So I planned to do a collodion wet plate of a knight with his armour and sword. My first thought was, that an original armor has no “color” so to say. You just see the reflections of the environment. That was the reason I wanted to shoot the first portrait in my garden. Unfortunately, the weather gods were against us and just after when we started a thunderstorm was on its way....

Shooting with a shallow depth of field has become so popular in the last few years that it’s almost become a cliché. But it remains something that’s very much in demand. Fast f/1.4 and f/1.2 lenses can be extremely expensive, though, and so very difficult for people to achieve with their f/slow-slower kit lenses, especially if working with APS-C or Micro Four Thirds sensors. Sony’s A7/A9 series of mirrorless cameras have a bad reputation for their grip ergonomics. And rightly so. I love my Sony A7III and it is still the best camera on the market for my particular needs, but the grip just isn’t anywhere near as good as on a pro DSLR. My pinky finger has nowhere to go, and when holding the camera for extended periods of time, often with a big chunky lens and a speedlight attached, my hand even starts to hurt....
