Sometimes, I like something so much that I get lost for words. This was my first reaction when I saw a stop motion movie WoodSwimmer by filmmaker Brett Foxwell. He turned something simple as cutting wood into a jaw-dropping video. It feels like you’re watching a deep scan of a tree, with all its perfections and imperfections. It’s a different and abstract view on something so ordinary and so familiar to us. Together with the gorgeous subject, Brett’s technique is simply amazing. So, when the two are brought together – you get a stop motion video that will make you replay it more than once.
Brett started WoodSwimmer after completing his big project Fabricated. Only this time, instead of metal, he focused on wood. As the artist himself says, he “became fascinated with the possibilities of a sci-fi world based on the alien forms to be found within this material that grows all around us.” From this fascination, he came up with the concept for his short stop motion film, and the idea started coming to life. https://www.instagram.com/p/BVaJtV2Bfg4/?taken-by=bfophoto The artist says that the technique was challenging to perfect. However, when he did, he became able to move the camera through the elements of the wood and film short sequences. He teamed up with bedtimes (Conor Grebel), who helped with the editing and wrote a song for WoodSwimmer. And as a result, a truly wonderful work of art was created.
