Basically, Crash Detection will detect when you’ve been in a crash. It will then vibrate, sound an alarm at max volume and ask if you need help. If you do not respond, it will prompt to call 911 and provide your location and car crash data. Pretty simple, and definitely useful. Since it’s not on by default, here’s how you can turn on Crash Detection on the Google Pixel 7.
What is Crash Detection?
What is Crash Detection?
Crash Detection is a feature that Google added with the Pixel 3, way back in 2018. Even though Apple is making a big deal of adding it on the iPhone 14 in 2022. Anyways, it’s basically, a feature within your phone that uses a bunch of sensors to detect if you’ve been in a crash. This feature does require a few permissions like location (all the time), physical activity and microphone to work. It can detect if you’ve been in a crash thanks to your phone’s location, motion sensors and nearby sounds. Google does mention that your phone may not be able to detect all crashes, and high impact activities could also trigger emergency services calls. It works pretty similarly to the iPhone 14 actually, but it doesn’t seem to have as many false positives, which is good for Google here.
Where does Crash Detection work?
Crash Detection doesn’t work everywhere, but it is available in quite a few countries. Those include: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Norway, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK and the US. It’s also available in the following languages: Danish, Dutch, English, French, French (Canada), Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish

To turn on Crash Detection, you’ll need to open the Safety App on your Pixel, and not the Settings app. If this is your first time opening the Safety app, you’ll be asked to sign in, set up your emergency contact and a few other details like your blood type, etc. After that, you’ll see the screen below. Scroll down to find the Crash Detection section and tap on “Turn On”.
From here, you’ll see another screen showing you what Crash Detection actually is. You can even try a demo of it in action.
Tap on “Yes I’m in”.
And you’re all set. Now Crash Detection is on, your Pixel 7. If you do a factory reset or switch phones at all, you’ll need to do this again.
