If you find it time and energy-consuming to organize your photos (I know I do), Google has just made it a little easier. The company is launching several tools that will make the app cleaner and easier to navigate. At the same time, organizing your photos should become simpler, too – but you can also easily digitize and import your old prints. So, let’s dive right in and see what’s new.
Product Manager at Google Photos, Sophie Kahan, introduces the new features in a blog post. For starters, Google Photos is updating the layout to show a grid or a list that you can quickly filter by type (albums, shared albums, favorites, on-device folders) and then sort the content. You can also always tag your photos to make your own life easier.
What I find particularly cool is the new option that helps you organize photos and albums that aren’t on Google Photos. I mean, the physical, tangible ones. Below the album grid, Google Photos adds a new “import photos” section alongside Locked Folder, utilities, archive, and trash. This way you can digitize photos or videos, or just copy photos from other services or move them from your digital camera. Then, Google Photos is also making the sharing tab tidier. There are sections for partner sharing, shared albums, and conversations. “With more defined sections, it’s easier to find, view, and manage your shared photos and videos, and stay up to date so you never miss the latest snap,” Sophie notes, adding that these updates will begin rolling out on Android this week, and are coming to iOS soon. Finally, there are screenshot-related updates as well. Most Android devices save screenshots in their own device folder. And from now on, you can keep your gallery tidy by not backing that folder up. Sometimes it’s good to back up some screenshots though, but I’m fine with most of them not popping out in Memories. Still, if you need to find them even if they’re not backed up, Google Photos will soon be adding a shortcut that will appear at the top of your main photo grid to take you right to them. I always cheer any new features that will make organization easier. As you can probably guess, I’m not exactly a master of organizing my files, my time… Anything, really.
