Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art is now officially available for preorders. Sigma has presented us with as many as four new lenses last month, but without any details on shipping and price. Now the 135mm is ready for preorders, and the shipping begins pretty soon – it’s expected on April 10th. We expected a good quality lens, and I’m sure it’s what they are. Sigma has definitely been raising the bar and improving over the years. But one thing that is pretty unexpected – the price.
One of the reasons why so many photographers opt for Sigma is the price-value ratio. They make good quality lenses on affordable price, and they are usually cheaper than Canon, Nikon or Zeiss. However, Sigma 135mm F/1.8 Art is available at $1400. All three variants, with Sigma, Nikon and Canon mounts are available at the same price. This time, Sigma lens is more expensive than Nikon and Canon counterparts. Canon EF 135mm f/2 costs $1000, which is quite a big difference. Nikon 135mm f/2 is quite close to Sigma, with the price of $1390. They still don’t beat Zeiss 135mm f/2, but it’s only $100 more expensive than Sigma 135mm F/1.8 Art.
Now, as I said, Sigma has definitely been raising their quality over time. Their 50mm was in second place at DxO Mark, and 85mm received the highest DxO Mark grade ever. Many photographers I know and whose comments I read use at least one of their lenses. And they often point out affordability as one of the advantages. So, I was kinda surprised when I saw that the 135mm is this pricey. The price and shipping details of another prime and two zooms lenses are still unknown. But considering that the 135mm is more expensive that I expected, now I can’t even guess how much the other ones will cost.
