National Geographic has announced the winners of their annual Travel Photographer of the Year photo contest. From over 15,000 entries from photographers in more than 30 countries, the grand prize went into hands of Sergio Tapiro Velasco from Mexico. The winning photo displays a magnificent sight of an erupting volcano hit by a bolt of lightning. And even though this is the winning image, the rest of them aren’t anything less stunning. The contest allowed photos taken within the last two years, with the entries in three categories: Nature, People and Cities. Other than the grand prize winner, the awards went to the winners of the first three places in each of the three categories. Some of the photos didn’t win the awards, but they are listed as the honorable mentions, and you can also see them in the gallery.

The grand prize winner won a ten-day trip for two to the Galápagos Archipelago with National Geographic Expeditions.” As for the first-, second- and third-place winners, they were awarded $2500, $750 and $500, respectively, as well as a subscription to National Geographic Traveler magazine.
