When the coronavirus crisis began, people started stocking up on toilet paper. I will never understand why toilet paper, but it appears you can do some quite fun stuff with it if you’re creative enough. Jesse Watson made it a star of his latest timelapse. It’s hilarious, creative, and it proves that you don’t need to break isolation to make something fun and keep the creative juices flowing.
“Quarantimelapse is about staying creative and sane while stay at home orders are in place throughout much of the world, Jesse explains. “I wanted to capture something a bit different than the normal empty city or empty grocery shelves whilst still capturing the essence of this peculiar time and pandemic.”
Every shot if the timelapse was created without leaving his home. He shot from his balcony or bedroom, ending up with 585 GB, or nearly 9,000 of individual photos. The project was shot on Nikon D850 and Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera with resolutions of 6K and 8K, and it was later downsampled to 4K. Jesse switched between three lenses: Tokina Cinema ATX 11-20mm T2.9, SIRUI 50mm f/1.8 anamorphic lens 1.33x, and the beautifully weird Laowa 24mm f/14 2X macro probe lens. For motion control, he used the eMotimo Spectrum ST4. The end result is really fun and filled with different kinds of shots: day and night, up close and into the distance… But the main roll (ba-dum-tss) remains the same. Who would have thought that toilet paper could be so photogenic? “Why didn’t any post-apocalyptic movie or comedy warn of us TP being one of the main things to stock up on!?” Jesse wonders. I’ve been wondering the same thing, but hey – there’s an idea for new creative projects, films and TV series.
