We’ve already seen that AI-generated faces can look so realistic that it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish them from real ones. And if you want to put a fake headshot to use, Generated Photos lets you choose from 100,000 AI-generated faces. They’re all free for download and you can use them whichever way you want. What’s more, many of them look so good that it’s hard to tell them apart from photos licensed by stock photo companies.
The project has been featured on Product Hunt, where Icons8 product designer Konstantin Zhabinskiy is listed as the creator. When you visit generated.photos, you get to browse through 100K of headshots. All of them show people who don’t exist, which means that there’s no need for model release and copyright hassle when using the photos commercially. They are all free for download, and you’re only requested to link back to Generated Photos. For now, it’s possible to browse through the images only on Google Drive. However, you’ll soon be able to browse them on the website and filter the “AI people” by ethnicity, age, skin, gender, and eye color. I browsed through one of the Google Drive folders and found different images. To be honest, some of the photos look a bit “off.” Okay, not just a bit:
But on the other hand, there are some that look pretty realistic, or they only need a bit of Photoshop to make them indistinguishable from portraits of real humans:
The applications of these headshots are many. They are aimed at designers who work on user interface design for web and mobile apps. They can also be used in presentations of all kinds, in emails, newsletters, or landing pages. You can add them to all sorts of handouts and worksheets and finally, use them as avatars. There are pros and cons to everything, and the same goes for projects like this. On the one hand, they are interesting and they can make life easier for everyone in need of headshots. On the other hand, they can affect the demand on stock photo websites, and even on headshot photographers and models. [via The Verge]
